Rain is not expected until next Wednesday and Thursday starting with the north areas on Wednesday and into South Georgia by Thursday. This gives growers a small window of opportunity to finish working in the orchards and bringing in what is left in Georgia as most are finished for the season and just waiting to accept offers at this point. Prices have dropped slightly and some growers with export quality or large pecans may wait to sell them after the first of the year in hopes of more demand and higher prices offered while others may take the cold storage options if they can afford the extra expense of holding onto them. This year’s market has some growers contemplating whether or not to continue to grow pecans or make new plans. Options are to take the trees down as some have done or not replace the ones lost to weather conditions and plant new crops. Many are offering their orchards to be sold or leased as some with families have decided not to continue on after the elders retire and cannot afford to wait for prices offered to go up and satisfy all parties. Most of the offerings are Blends and prices are still trending downward as demand is moderate and sales still on the slow side. Prices for Blends mostly with Stuarts and export quality (nut count 50-56) 46-48% meat yields $1.60-1.70 few high as $1.80 per pound, Blends with export quality Desirables (nut count 47-49) meat yields 49-52% $1.70-1.75 occasional $1.85 per pound.
